Among all the benefits for victims of the fire, one stands out as at least ironic. It was held November 15-on the same day full control of the fire was announced. And it was staged at Harbison Canyon Road and Warfield Way, one of the hottest of the fire's hot spots. The event, to benefit residents who lost their homes to the fire: a barbecue ... Geoff Patnoe, chief of staff to County Supervisor Dianne Jacob, lost his Tierrasanta townhouse to the fire. He was in Ramona with his boss, dealing with constituents' fire concerns, when his own home burned. His wife, Christine, was able to save their dog Spencer, a few clothes and wedding pictures. And Geoff's 2003 San Diego Magazine "People To Watch" award ... With the smell of smoke still hanging in the air over most of San Diego, hard-hit Julian was already seeking to lure back visitors. The pitch from the mountain town's chamber of commerce: "Julian Is Here and Better Than Ever!" ... In the midst of the fire's tragedy, there were other emergencies. The San Diego Blood Bank announced a drastic shortage. And one of the civic do-gooders to step up was Karl Strauss. The brewery staged a blood drive at its Sorrento Mesa restaurant, giving beer for blood. But not in that order. They called it "Give a Pint, Get a Pint." Donors got a mug and a certificate redeemable for a pint of brew-well after the bloodletting.
